Doris Padgett Celebrates 50 Years with Sunnyvale Library

Our very own member, Doris Padgett, was recently recognized in the Dallas Morning News for her 50 years of service to the Sunnyvale Library. Please take the following link to read the full feature:

Doris has praised the SGC for being instrumental in Sunnyvale getting a library. In 1964 SGC members petitioned Judge Lew Sterrett to establish the Sunnyvale Library, making it the 13^th library in Dallas County.

The Sunnyvale Library’s 50^th anniversary celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 6^th from 10—2. SGC has been asked to serve cookies, cake and sandwiches in 2 hour shifts. If you would like to participate, please contact Sallyann Nevins at 972-226-1315 or GN@txshowcar.com.

Why Recycle?

Trash is never “thrown away.” It’s only moved from one place (our homes and businesses) to another (landfills or incinerators). You have the power to choose: will you trash that item or recycle it?

Before you decide, read the following “Benefits of Recycling” and think about this question: Where will your trash do the most good for future generations? In a landfill? Or at a recycling facility?

Recycling creates jobs

Recycling creates new, well-paying jobs and promotes economic development in the recycling and manufacturing industries in the United States.

Recycling reduces pollution

Pollution from landfills — including cyanide, dioxins, mercury, methane, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and lead — escapes into the air and leaches into groundwater. In 2012, Americans recycled 87 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW), eliminating the equivalent of emissions from more than 33 million passenger vehicles. Making products from already refined waste materials reduces — and often avoids altogether — the need for manufacturers to use toxic chemicals, essential when using virgin materials. Municipal waste incinerators spew out all kinds of air pollutants, and are often located in urban neighborhoods. Recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to incinerators.

Recycling saves energy

The 87 million tons of MSW Americans recycled in 2012 saved the equivalent of energy consumed by almost 10 million U.S. households in one year.

Recycling conserves resources

Recycling conserves natural resources such as timber, minerals and water. Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrels of oil, and 4100 kilowatt hours of electricity, enough energy to power the average American home for five months. Turning trees into paper is the most water- intensive industrial process in the United States. Paper recycling mills nearly always use less water and they don’t pollute the water nearly as much. Recycling also protects wildlife habitat and biodiversity because it lessens the need to mine, extract or harvest virgin materials.

SGC Hosting “The Love of Flowers” Design Workshop – 5/9/15

The Sunnyvale Garden Club (SGC) will host “The Love of Flowers” design workshop on Saturday, May 9 at Christian Care Center (CCC) Greenway Center dining room for SGC members (up to 30) and CCC residents (up to 20). See attached document for more details.

There is no charge for this workshop. A variety of containers will the furnished, but SGC members are asked to bring a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store or Sam’s and greenery from their yards.

SGC members must sign up with Rachel Doyle (by May 6^th) to participate. Please contact Rachel (via cell phone or e-mail — 214.675.5218 or Rachel.doyle@att.net ) if you have questions or would like to sign up for the workshop.

Here are samples of the types of designs that can be created with the containers that will be provided. Keep in mind that the look of your design will vary depending on the type of flowers and greenery you provide and the designs that the instructor teaches.

Valentine Project Update – Thank You SGC Members!

Dear SGC Member,

If I knew how to make this email open with a round of applause, I would do that right now!

Once again all the products you brought filled the table to running over with a variety of wonderful products in all sizes.

We managed to fill 85 gift bags to capacity! We ran out of gift bags. This was really a successful community outreach and made each recipient so happy.

At Christian Care Center, we had to empty all the bags and remove all the food items as she reminded me they could only give their residents what was approved on the list. We still had plenty of toothbrushes, toothpaste, calendars, lotions, crossword puzzles, shampoos, pens, pencils, bud vase with a red rose, and extra surprises as well. She wrote the name and unit number on each of the quart zip lock bags with the apricot fried pies, saying the resident would receive it on their tray tonight at dinner when someone can help them. The other food items will be given to healthier patients.

It was sad to see so many patients so ill and fragile. Many of the residents were sound asleep as we came to their rooms and left the bag on their table. Nancy Keim took the time to accept a visit with one of the residents and visited for 15 minutes providing that welcome visitor they longed to talk to and enjoy connecting with. Another lady took the valentine out of her bag and held it to her chest, saying, “This is the only valentine I will receive.” The creative, sparkling, hand made valentines were a big success in bringing these residents joy at all 3 locations we delivered to.

Imagine how happy they each were to open and remove all the contents and see the treats! Surely it will make them happy all week! Suzie Duncan at Bakers Rib provided 70 fresh sugar free fried apricot pies that are definitely a great treat to taste and enjoy! Helen Ethridge and her partner at Windsor Florist provided 70 white plastic bud vases with an authentic red silk rose in it that was so genuine that you sniffed it expecting to smell a rose fragrance!

We delivered to a Rehab facility on Town East as well as to Crescent Manor — both in Mesquite and completed the last delivery at 4PM. A lot of people were blessed today and felt the wonder of being loved with these surprise gifts they received at their door!

Thank you for your outstanding and generous support and participation in reaching out to the community as a vital member of the Sunnyvale Garden Club! You make a difference!

Sunnyvale Christmas Tour of Homes – Sat., Dec. 6, 2014 – 1-6PM

The 2014 Christmas Tour of Homes hosted by the Sunnyvale Garden Club will be a great way to get excited and inspired for the Holidays. Take a few hours in your busy holiday schedule on Saturday, Dec. 6th from 1 to 6 p.m. and come see how s…ome of the folks in Sunnyvale decorate their beautiful and unique homes for Christmas.

There are 6 fabulous homes on tour. Three homes are on Tanner Creek Circle, two are on Barnes Bridge Rd. and one is on Michael Lane. There is a Tuscan mansion, designed after the beautiful Italian homes in the Tuscany area of Italy. A 10,000 sq. ft. home built in Indian-American style has many unique features including a 30 ft. dome and hand-painted cherubs. The “Mediterranean Contemporary” style house that overlooks horse pastures on a 28 acre property has about 6,000 sq. ft. Another contemporary house is built in the Frank Lloyd Wright style and features a “honeycomb” ceiling in the main living area. One traditional style house has a great open floor plan and uses unique tiles manufactured by Sunnyvale’s own Marazzi tile company. Another traditional home has lots of room for entertaining large families. The grandchildren call the backyard their own “park.”

Tickets are required for admission to each house. Tickets cost $15 to tour all six houses. You can buy tickets now through Saturday at the Sunnyvale Public Library. Tickets will be sold on Saturday at the “Tour Headquarters” at the Sunnyvale High School Cafetorium at 222 N. Collins Rd., Sunnyvale. When you present a ticket at Tour Headquarters, you will be given a map to all 6 homes, as well as a little written information about each home.

Parking is extremely limited at the homes. In fact, parking will be “impossible” at some homes (for example Barnes Bridge Rd and Michael Lane). Sunnyvale ISD has generously provided two school buses to be used as shuttle buses to the homes. Park your car at the Sunnyvale High School student parking lot, board the SISD bus to go to the homes on Barnes Bridge and Tanner Creek. Then the SISD shuttle will stop at the SISD Middle School for you to take a smaller shuttle down the very narrow Michael Lane. The two SISD buses will be driving a continuous loop to the homes and back to the school – so you will not have to wait long for a bus. You can take as much time as you want at each home, and you can “jump on” either bus at any time. I know that many people do not like to give up the “control” of driving your own car, but believe me, you will find no place to park at some of the homes. (You cannot park at those steep ditches on the sides of Barnes Bridge Rd.! Nor can you park in private driveways. Parking will be prohibited in the cul-de-sac on Tanner Creek Cir. [bus cannot make the turn if a car is parked there]). You will not want to walk long distances from wherever you may find to park. So, please, do not try to “drive your own car.”

You will also want to come to “Tour Headquarters” because there will be a wonderful Bake Sale featuring home-baked goodies made by the fabulous cooks of Sunnyvale Garden Club. There will also be a Gift Shop that will have more than 20 vendors selling everything from jewelry, clothing, food products, glass plate garden art, local Sunnyvale honey, SGC Cookbooks and much more. Get some of your Christmas shopping done now! If you shop before the tour, your purchase can be held for you until you return from the tour.

Sunnyvale’s florist, The Wild Orchid (owned by SGC member, Kathy Dalby) has generously donated beautiful floral arrangements for each home.
