Reminder – SGC Summer Symposium

Our next and final SGC Summer Symposium for 2013 is Tuesday, August 13 at 6:00 p.m. at Janet Nevil’s home, 582 North Collins, Sunnyvale, TX.

Potluck Supper  (Oh, so good!) We will eat first, then make Earth Buckets.

We need to know how many people will be attending – so we can purchase supplies accordingly.

So, please e-mail Rachel at Rachel.doyle@att.net if you plan to attend.

We will be making Earth Buckets.  What is an Earth Bucket?   It is a water-wise or self-watering system for growing vegetables or flowers in a bucket – actually, two buckets.  I have made about 18 Earth Buckets for my garden this year.  They have worked very well; I have planted tomatoes, squash, peppers and cucumbers in these buckets.  Everything is still alive and producing veggies.  I recently had to move 8 of the Earth Buckets to my driveway so my peppers & tomato plants could get enough sunlight.  Can you believe that I could move full grown plants to a new location in the middle of the summer?!

Container Gardening            Container Gardening 2

You will need to bring TWO 5 gallon buckets.  We will supply the tools needed (drills & jig saw), the watering pipe, the potting mix and a tomato plant that Janet has grown for you.  Sallyann and her husband Gary, have generously supplied some green 5-gallon pickle buckets, but there will not be enough for everybody.  You can re-cycle some buckets (TidyCat litter buckets will work well, too) or you can buy new buckets at Lowes (blue), Home Depot (orange) or white (Wal-Mart).  They are about $3 each. I prefer the buckets at Lowe’s and Home Depot because they have a 3” lip that will provide a deeper water reservoir.

I will also show you how to make an Earth Box, but we will not be making Earth Boxes on Tuesday night – they are too heavy to move!  The blue containers in the photo below are my homemade Earth Boxes.  They work really well.  And, yes, my little stinker, Buddy, did get that tomato – before the other critters in my back yard got it.

This is an event that you may want to invite your husbands or sons to attend.  They like to drill and cut holes!  (I am not suggesting that you can’t do it, but we know that the guys love to use power tools!)  You know they will enjoy that great potluck food!  Y’all can drill/cut holes in as many buckets as you bring, but we can only supply watering pipes and potting mix for one Earth Bucket per family.

We need to know how much potting mix to prepare and how many watering pipes to make.  So, please send an e-mail to Rachel to let her know if you plan to attend and make an Earth Bucket.  There is no need to reply if you are not planning to attend.

Hope to see you Tuesday night.  You can go home with a tomato plant for your portable fall garden – and with this self-watering system, you should be able to keep it alive through our hot August.

Great Snack Recipe!

The following snack, compliments of Carol Duckworth,  was served a the last summer symposium and received rave reviews.  It is a great “any-time” snack and so easy to make!

RITZ CHIPS GOODIES

1 pkg Ritz Chips (Original Flavor)

2 cups Pecan Pieces

1 stick butter

½ cup White Karo Syrup (can use Dark Karo or mix them)

½ cup white sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

½ tsp. baking soda

Pre-heat oven to 250 F.  Spray a large cake pan or cookie sheet with sides with non-stick spray.  (I prefer a 9×13 cake pan.)  Spread the Ritz chips in the pan, breaking them up slightly.  Add pecans.  Set aside.

In a 2 quart pan, melt butter.  When melted, add Karo and sugar.  Bring to a full boil, stirring constantly.  Boil for 4 ½ minutes, stirring constantly.  Remove from heat and add vanilla and baking soda.  Stir well, then pour mixture over the Ritz Chips and pecans, stirring to coat well.  It is naturally sticky.

Bake one hour, stirring every 15 minutes.  (Spray your spoon with non-stick  spray to prevent sticking.)  Mixture will be crisp and slightly brown when done.

Turn out onto foil and let cool.  Break up into smaller pieces and store in airtight container.

Control yourself and do not eat it all.

Janet Nevil Featured in Neighbors Go Article

Best Neighborhoods: Close to city but with country feel

Janet Nevil and her husband, Holly Nevil Jr., couldn’t find a Sunnyvale house to buy in 1995, so they settled down in an unconventional spot.

“We built our house here in a horse pasture,” she said. “My son was getting ready to start kindergarten, and we wanted to go to a place that had a good school. I was raised on a farm in the Ozarks, and I wanted to raise my son on a farm.”

Sunnyvale’s prime location — about 20 minutes east of downtown Dallas — and wide expanses of undeveloped land make it an increasingly popular destination for affluent homebuyers and contributed to its ranking as the best neighborhood for this demographic in the Garland-Mesquite area, according to an intensive data analysis by The Dallas Morning News.

“I think if you look at the history of Dallas, the momentum has been to go north,” said Dan Savage, Sunnyvale’s interim town manager. “Sunnyvale is to the east, and I just think people haven’t looked in this direction very hard. I think the ones that have are delighted with Sunnyvale. It’s basically a well kept secret.”

The News’ rankings were based on factors like safety, neighborhood maintenance and ease of commute, weighted according to the surveyed preferences of individuals making $85,000 per year or more in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

To qualify for this category, only neighborhoods with a median home value of $250,000 or more were considered. Price-sensitive factors like affordability, home-value appreciation, and quality of public schools did not factor into The News’ analysis.

The Nevils own Miller Brace Co., which specializes in making and fitting body braces. The commute between their office, located near Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, and home is only 20 minutes, another reason they targeted Sunnyvale, Janet Nevil said.

Savage, whose interim term as town manager will soon expire, lives in Plano and commutes to Sunnyvale.

“If you work in downtown Dallas and you want more of a country lifestyle, we have larger-lot homes in Sunnyvale,” Savage said. “This is probably a place that would be as close to the downtown market as any [developing area] in the metroplex.”

Lance and Uma Youts recently moved to the area from Far North Dallas. While searching for a new home in which to raise their 7-year-old triplets, they had three things in mind: proximity to downtown Dallas, high-performing schools and a quality plot of land on which they could build their ideal home.

But because most of the developing areas near their old home would push them farther from Lance’s downtown office, where he works as a certified public accountant, the couple decided to build their new house in Sunnyvale.

“We wanted to have our own floor plan and gear it toward our own lifestyle,” Uma Youts said. “I just like the floor plan. When you have a bunch of kids running around, it’s very open and roomy.”

Residents like Kim Ingram, a member of the Sunnyvale ISD board of trustees, are quick to point out that the community is full of people of various income groups and is built around the school system.

Ingram, her husband Blake and their two children, now 21 and 18, moved to Sunnyvale in 1999, and found they could purchase an expansive 10-acre piece of land for a relatively affordable price. The Ingrams built their home around the land as much as their lifestyle.

“We were able to take advantage of the views and know exactly where the pond was and where the sun was going to hit the house and really plan for that,” she said. “I can sit in the breakfast nook and look out over the neighbor’s fishing pond and watch the sunrise and the sunset, and watch the changing seasons.”

For her, that country comfort is hard to beat.

“It’s really just a peaceful view.”
